Meet Avery, a first-year Adventure Studies student whose love for the outdoors has shaped both her personal and professional journey. With roots in Victoria, BC, Avery brings a deep appreciation for nature, a passion for outdoor education, and a curiosity for new challenges to TRU Adventure Studies. From guiding youth through the backcountry to crafting her own jewelry, she embodies creativity, leadership, and a genuine connection to the natural world.

Tell us a little about yourself — where you’re from, what you’re passionate about, maybe a fun fact, or anything else you’d like to share.

Hi, I’m Avery! I’m grateful to have grown up, lived, and played on the traditional territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people (Victoria, BC). I spent much of my upbringing outdoors—mountain biking, hiking, and exploring nature.

I’m passionate about nature interpretation and absolutely love everything to do with plants and animals!

Before coming to TRU this year, I worked as an outdoor educator with youth in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, guiding canoeing, hiking, and mountain biking. I loved being able to share my passion for the outdoors and inspire youth to connect with nature.

Fun fact: I’m big on making my own jewelry!

What drew you to this program, and what are you most looking forward to this year?

Last year, while guiding youth on mountain bike trips, I had an epiphany: There is something truly special about helping others connect with the outdoors. Being able to take clients into wild, beautiful places and facilitate meaningful, memorable experiences—especially for young people—felt very fulfilling to me.

I’m very excited to immerse myself in all the whitewater kayaking and rafting courses that TRU has to offer.

What do you hope to do with your training after completing the program?

I’m excited to take my experiences and certifications far and wide after the program! I’m feeling genuinely intrigued and curious about raft guiding and swiftwater rescue work, and I’m eager to see where this path takes me—both during and after the program.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying to Adventure Studies?

My advice to someone thinking about applying to TRU Adventure Studies would be that if you love nature, crave adventure, and want to build skills that apply far beyond the outdoors, this program is 100% worth it.
