From the mountains of the Kootenays to the peaks he dreams of guiding one day, Luca is turning his love for the outdoors into a future in adventure. Growing up in Kaslo, BC, he spent his days skiing, biking, and exploring the backcountry—always chasing new experiences and capturing them through photography. Now a student in the Adventure Studies program, Luca is building the skills, experience, and confidence to pursue a career in guiding and adventure storytelling.
Tell us a little about yourself — where you’re from, what you’re passionate about, maybe a fun fact, or anything else you’d like to share.
Hey, I’m Luca! I grew up in Kaslo, BC, in the Kootenays, where skiing, mountain biking, and hiking were a huge part of my life growing up. I’ve always wanted to find a way to keep doing the things I love as a profession. I’m passionate about spending time outdoors in any form and love documenting my adventures through photography.
Fun Fact: I lived in New Zealand for 6 months.
What drew you to this program, and what are you most looking forward to this year?
I was drawn to the Adventure Studies program because it felt like the perfect stepping stone toward turning my outdoor passions into a career. Over the last two summers, I’ve been coaching youth mountain biking camps and found it incredibly rewarding to work with people who are genuinely excited to be outside and learning new skills.
I am most looking forward to Ski Tour 2 and Rock 2 courses with all my friends.
What do you hope to do with your training after completing the program?
After completing the program, I hope to work toward my Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) ski guide certification and possibly pursue full IFMGA certification one day.
Alongside guiding, I also want to continue developing adventure photography, with the goal of balancing guiding storytelling in the outdoor industry.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying to Adventure Studies?
If someone was thinking about applying to the program and is passionate about being outdoors I would say just do it! As you learn in the program there’s so many different avenues you can take in adventure. Even if you’re not super interested in guiding there’s so many places this program can take you. If you don’t stick around for both years there’s so much learning to be had on how to be a better backcountry recreationalist.
