Raised in the Southern Gulf Islands and surrounded by stunning coastal landscapes, Sóley developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors from an early age. From snowboarding and hiking to rock climbing and spending time on the ocean, adventure has always been a big part of her life. Now a student in TRU’s Adventure Studies program, Sóley is turning that passion into a pathway toward a career in the outdoor industry, where she hopes to build new skills, challenge herself and share her love for adventure with others.

Tell us a little about yourself — where you’re from, what you’re passionate about, or anything else you’d like to share.

My name is Sóley, and I was raised in the Southern Gulf Islands, which is the traditional and unceded territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ and Hul’q’umi’num’ peoples. Having grown up surrounded by stunning coastal nature, I have developed a deep admiration and respect for the area. I love to snowboard, hike, rock climb, and spend time on the ocean.

Fun fact: I am a musician!

What drew you to this program, and what are you most looking forward to this year?

I met Adventure Guide alumni on an expedition in 2024, and after hearing all about the program, I decided to apply! I love working with people, and being in nature, so I figured this was a great place to start my journey towards working in the outdoor industry.

I’m excited to learn how to sea kayak (properly), and trad climb!

What do you hope to do with your training after completing the program?

I’m intrigued by lots of ideas! I hope to work as a sea kayak guide this summer, continue to expand my rock climbing repertoire, and maybe even do coast guard, search and rescue, ski patrol, or snowboard instruction. I absolutely adore working with kids, so longer term, I would like to incorporate adventure sports into that passion! I’d also like to possibly become an outdoor educator of some kind.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying to Adventure Studies?

The courses at TRU facilitate a space for you to test your limits, do it! Some moments are challenging, but passion, determination and practicing gratitude will get you far. Learning your genuine capabilities is something many people miss out on, but this program teaches you how.
