Sam graduated from the Adventure Guide Program in 2022 and from the Bachelor of Tourism Management in 2024.
The 2023-2024 Valedictorian for the Faculty of Adventure, Culinary, & Tourism is Adventure Studies Alumni and BTM student was Samuel (Sam) Beavers. In 2022-2023, it was another Adventure Studies Alumni – Gabriel Corbeil. Sam shared the following about what it means to be this year’s valedictorian:
Being named Valedictorian brought me relief and fulfillment. After feeling lost during two years of travel post-high school, I regained zeal for life through the Adventure Guide Program, which pushed me to excel at university. There, I discovered a love for academia, a cherished community in Kamloops, and an enduring passion. While the award isn’t necessary to validate my achievements, it serves as a reminder of what’s possible with full commitment. The most memorable part of my BTM journey was the in-between moments with friends at Common Grounds, filled with conversation, coffee, and laughter. As I embark on my Master of Environmental Science, I look forward to more of these moments, which give true meaning to the academic experience.”
Passionate about outdoor adventures and diverse cultures, he constantly challenges himself, working hard to achieve his goals. Sam recognizes and appreciates his peers and instructors for their encouragement, support and guidance throughout the program. Above all, he values the friendships he’s made and the shared passions he’s enjoyed with those closest to him. Apart from being our Equipment Bay Attendant, Sam facilitates whitewater kayak pool sessions and teaches whitewater kayaking for the department. He traveled to Ottawa to volunteer at the International Indigenous Tourism Conference in February 2024 and volunteered at the Allies Mountain Bike Festival hosted by the Simpcw First Nation.
